Ice Climbing Carabiners - Types
Carabiners come in different types and are used in a multitude of situations, whether in climbing-related activities or industrial work. Make sure to use biners which are designed specifically for Ice Climbing, or for the type of Climbing that you do. In this section, learn what type of Carabiner suits your Climbing needs:
Type of Gate
- Straight
This is the most common type of Carabiner.
- Locking
A Carabiner made with a locking mechanism prevents the gate from unintended opening. It can be oval, symmetrical, or asymmetrical. This type of biner is usually used in Belaying, Rappelling, and in securing pieces of equipment.
- Wire
The thinness of Carabiner with a wire type of gate provides larger opening and more room for the rope.
- Bent
This type has a concave shape which provides more room and makes clipping easier.
Shape
- D- Carabiners
D-shaped Carabiners come in two forms: symmetrical or asymmetrical.
Symmetrical biners provide more room for the rope and are usually used in lead and top rope climbs. On the other hand, asymmetrical biners have less room because they are made with larger gate openings.
- Oval Carabiners
Oval Carabiners are versatile and used in aid climbing. They are also cheaper and weaker than other non-oval biners. The shape helps control load shifting and distributes pressure on both sides.
Keep in mind that each type of Carabiner is made for a specific purpose. Know the different types of biners and choose what meets your requirements.
