Getting Started - Ice Climbing Rules & Etiquette
Like in any sport or outdoor activity, Ice Climbing requires you to follow certain rules and regulations. Here are some of the basic rules you should keep in mind in order to make your trip fun while avoiding being destructive to anyone or to the environment.
Pre-Climb:
- Before anything else, make sure you are fit to climb. Climbing ice when you are out of shape will increase the possibility of injuries and accidents. This sport requires proper training and mental preparedness.
- Ice Climbing does not only require skills, but also specific equipment and apparel. Make sure that you have all the necessary pieces of equipment with you.
- Do your homework. It pays to do some research about the area you wish to climb before actually climbing it. You may also coordinate with other climbers who have climbed the same area so you can get some tips on how to deal with it.
- Inform someone about your trip. Let him or her know some essential information such as the area you want to climb and expected time of return.
During the Climb:
- Preserve the environment’s beauty for other people to enjoy. Do not leave anything or take anything.
- Never climb beyond your ability. Know when you have to turn back. Use your best judgment. Many climbers have lost their lives because they decided to go on climbing even if the odds were already against them.
Following the rules and guidelines above, you will not only give others the chance to experience the pristine environment of the outdoors, you are also ensured of having a beautiful place to go back to in the future. Likewise, you will be able to share the same passion with the next generation of ice climbers. Have a safe and fun ice climb!
