TUESDAY, 21 NOVEMBER 2006
Scotland - Two young ice climbers have died yesterday in Raigmore hospital after a blizzard hit them last Sunday afternoon.
The ice climbers, aged 23 and 18, were in the Cairngorm mountains in northern Scotland when they were struck with winds up to 120 mph. The temperatures reached minus 20C. Search and rescue teams looked for the two ice climbers when they failed to show up in a lodge near Avuemore last Sunday night.
Both ice climbers were under a winter training course for the University of Aberdeen's Lairig mountaineering club. They are said to be the first fatalities this winter's climbing season.
