New Zealand - Jamie Smith, founder of the world's largest indoor ice wall - the Ice Wall found in Kinlochleven, Scotland, has arrived in Franz Josef to help in building a 10-meter ice climbing wall.
The ice climbing wall is part of the Hukawai Glacier Centre, a $6.5 million project that would be the biggest facility of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. The wall has six faces that allow 20 climbers of all levels to simultaneously ice climb.
Smith explains that the consistency of the water and ice is the main thing to consider in creating a glacier like ice. "We want people to climb the wall and imagine, despite being indoors, that they could be outside climbing the real glacier."
The glacier centre will be opened early next year.
