Three Climbers Missing on Mount Hood

Rescuers were forced yesterday by blinding snow and avalanche conditions to temporarily stop looking for three climbers missing on Mount Hood.

The climbers were identified as Kelly James, 48, and Brian Hall, 37, from Dallas, Texas and Jerry Cook, 36, from New York. James was able to call his son Sunday afternoon through a cell phone, and related that he was in a snow cave below the summit. His companions were looking for help, James said.James has been injured last Friday so the three of them made a snowcave for shelter. The following day, Hall and Cook climbed down to ask for help but there is still no news about them.

Deputy Pete Hughes of the Hood River County Sheriff’s Office said that the climbers climbed "one of the most dangerous routes at one of the most dangerous times of the years to climb Mount Hood." Rescuers say that James is at about 11,000 feet, basing from the GPS coordinates provided by his cell phone. Hall and Cook, however, did not have cell phones with GPS capability.
