JHMG's Guided Ice Climbs Still Pending
THURSDAY, 15 FEBRUARY 2007
Kenny Gasch, a representative of Jackson Hole Mountain Guides (JHMG) at Cody, relates that their firm is finding it hard to get a permit that will allow them to provide guided ice climbs at the frozen water falls in the South Fork.
Over the last five years, their efforts have been "fruitless", Gasch says. "They (Shoshone Forest officials) haven't done anything in the last five years to educate themselves about the sport of ice climbing," Gasch adds. What the firm wants, according to Gasch, is a "small venue into guided ice climbs".
The USFS has cited "concerns about environmental effects" and the "well-being of bighorn sheep herds" as reasons for the long-standing disapproval. JHMG has already initiated an environmental assessment to know the impacts of guided ice climbing. This February 23, a meeting has been scheduled with Wapiti District Ranger Terry Root.
