Ataxia, HACE's Most Vital Sign
FRIDAY, 23 MARCH 2007
Ataxia, a medical condition characterized by a lack of coordination, balance, and/or control of movement, has been confirmed by a recent study as the most vital sign of High Altitude Cerebral Edema or HACE.
Based on data from more than 70,000 people, the study has confirmed what many mountain medicine experts have known for years. Affecting parts and/or the entire body, HACE's serious symptoms include wobbly walking and lack of coordination.
Climbers suffering from ataxia cannot walk "heel-to-toe". HACE is caused by fluid collected inside the brain and/or lungs. Climbers are recommended not to cook inside a sealed tent for this may lead to HACE and High Altitude Pulmonary Edema while asleep.
