Climbing Couple Rescued at Franz Josef Glacier
THURSDAY, 29 MARCH 2007
A husband-and-wife climbing team stranded at Franz Josef Glacier in New Zealand has been rescued last Sunday, according to www.stuff.co.nz.
Constable Mike Tinnelly, West Coast Police Search and Rescue Coordinator, explained that the couple were trying to reach Castle Rock Hut at Franz Josef Glacier. They ran out of time so they called the police through their cell phone at 6:30 PM. The couple was getting exhausted, Tinnelly added. Moreover, the ice was melting quickly.
The couple, who are said to be from Canterbury, was rescued at 11 PM. The Christchurch-based Westpac Rescue helicopter, which has night vision gear, was used when the West Coast Alpine Cliff Rescue team failed to get the couple because of "failing light".
