Kilimanjaro's Ice Will Remain, Scientists Say
TUESDAY, 24 APRIL 2007
Austrian scientists negate the prediction that the glaciers on Mount Kilimanjaro will be gone within 20 years. The University of Innsbruck-led team has presented their assessment at the European Geosciences Union General Assembly meeting.
They say that the compacted ice on the crater on Uhuru Peak, Mount Kilimanjaro's highest peak, will remain even after 2040. "Precipitation and not temperature is the key to the white peak's future," the team said. The group has done data and modeling work during their research.
Dr. Thomas Moelg calls the slope glaciers of Kilimanjaro as the "evaporating glaciers of Kilimanjaro". The slope glaciers may last longer than the plateau glaciers, which may be gone within 30 or 40 years from now, the group said.
