Sherpa Climber, First Everest Casualty this Season
FRIDAY, 27 APRIL 2007
A sherpa climber has died while climbing Mount Everest yesterday. The sherpa climber is said to be the first casualty of the season according to www.everestnews.com.
The sherpa climber was hit with a block of ice while going to Camp 3. Camp 3 is at 23,700 feet or 7200 meters. Climbers have to go through Lhotse Face. Skill, strength, and stamina are needed to climb the wall of ice, which is also steep and treacherous.
To avoid the Lhotse Face, sherpas do not go through Camp 3. Instead, they move directly from Camp 2 to Camp 4 on the South Col.
