Singapore's First Women's Team Train for Everest
MONDAY, 23 APRIL 2007
Singapore's first women's climbing team is training for their Mount Everest climb next year. The team will be climbing Tibet's Cho Oyu, the sixth highest in the world, in August as part of their training.
The team has been training for three-and-a-half years already. Last year, the team climbed the Muztag Ata mountain located along the border of China and Pakistan to train. The team is improving their skills and techniques, especially in using both hands for the ice climbing tools.
Team Leader Jane Lee, who is the youngest member at age 23, is set to prove that the women's team can match or even exceed what the five male Singaporean teams have done previously. They will attempt to get the whole team together up to the top of the Everest.
However, Lee says that the hardest challenge is raising the funds for their climb. They have raised around $20,000 of the $1 million needed for their climb. Presently, they are still looking for sponsorship - corporate or government - to finance their Everest climb.
