A Mission Guided by The Moonlight
THURSDAY, 28 JUNE 2007
It was an exhilarating yet fulfilling journey to the top of the Arwa Tower for Swiss nationals Stephan Siegrist, Thomas Senf, and Denis Burdet when they ascended the North East face of the said mountain route in Himalaya, India last June 7, 2007.
The three Swissmen called their route the "Lightning Strike" since after all the struggles and hardships they’ve been through in going up the peak of the Arwa Tower, still they were able to pull through with their mission through the help of moonlight in the night of May 31, 2007.
The team almost gave up during their first attempt due to many hindrances blocking their way up. One of those was when one of their companions, Anita Kolar, developed oedema. The group decided to transfer Anita to a lower altitude. Another setback was when they experienced continuous snowfall while climbing up. However, when they were aided by the light of the moon, they decided to set off once again to climb the 100m structureless granite face. Fortunately, seven days after, their efforts had all paid off. The group successfully reached the summit of Arwa Tower.
"The expedition unfolded in the same vein as it began with Anita's pulmonary oedema," says Siegrist. "It was marked by ups and downs, by positive events and setbacks. That's why we believe the name "Lightning Strike" fit the route perfectly, with its positive and negative charges - and the line resembled a rockfall, which struck like a lightening up through the enormous wall!"
