A Mother Climbs for a Good Cause
SATURDAY, 30 JUNE 2007
A 35-year-old mother of three wholeheartedly vowed to shin up the heights of Mont Blanc in support of the new cancer unit for teenagers in Belfast Hospital.
Probably by now, Shauna Newman is already on her way soaring up the challenging altitude of the highest mountain in Western Europe, since it was reported that she planned to ascend to the mountain over the weekend. And though her husband, Anthony, as well as with her mother didn’t really approve of this move that she underwent, still Shauna opted to push through with her plans because she so wanted to help raise the money for the cancer unit in Belfast Hosital.
One of the owners of Newman Rea Wealth Management in Ballymoney, Shauna had already gone through so many challenges and adventures going up several mountains. She had been to Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya, Rwenzori Range, Mount Elgon, Slemish, and Mount Kinabalu. However, she finds this weekend adventure as the most challenging and special of all.
"This weekend's expedition is such a good cause, " Shauna says. "Eight of these units for teenage cancer patients have already been built in the UK so it was time that Belfast got one. The planning process is already under way here and it will take approximately £1.5m to complete, so hopefully we can raise that. When teenagers are sick they are usually too old to go into the children's wards and end up in adult wards. The new unit will let them spend time in an environment geared directly towards them, with Xboxes and i, iPods. As they often spend long periods of time in a cancer unit, this will provide a relaxing atmosphere. I wanted to help this great cause, and there was no one else from Northern Ireland available."
