An Ice-Climbing Sculpture in Between The Walls
SATURDAY, 30 JUNE 2007
A large ice-climbing sculpture is set to mount at W. Colorado Avenue a few months from now. The image is said to be an ice climber ascending a wall of ice, approximately 36 feet tall. The organizers behind the project would also like to put some public benches in the grassy area below it.
This ice-climbing sculpture is the idea of Rolfe Schwenniger and his partners from J.Roskelley Mountaineering Center. Primarily, the group thought of putting up the J.Roskelley Mountaineering Center in the small house that sits at 320 W. Colorado. Schwenninger and his colleagues, however, got fascinated with the aesthetics of the site while in the process of designing the center. The group is particularly awed at the sight of the small house being sandwiched between two big brick buildings, so they thought of subduing the effect of the three-storey wall to the east by mounting a sculpture next to the wall.
The said proposed project has already been approved by the Historic and Architectural Review Commission, as well as with the Telluride Town Council and the Planning and Zonning Department.
Schwenninger further adds that that sculpture would be a vast improvement for the said location and it’ll also be fitting for the town’s mountain character.
