Of Ice Climbing and Film-making

SATURDAY, 30 JUNE 2007

Can a person so in love with film-making survive the dangers and challenges of the mountains?

David Rasmussen is a cinematographer, and yet, he was given several opportunities to do work on top of the mountains. He was recently hired by a British medical expedition and joined the Everest’s 29,035-foot high summit. Rasmussen willingly shared his experiences mixing work and adventures on the mountains.

Already an experienced climber, Rasmussen had been to Himalayas before when he filmed festivals for Royal Nepal Airlines in 1986 and 1987. He had also been to the K2 Mountain in Pakistan in 1999 and on Mount Everest in 2003. And as if he missed the Everest a lot, Rasmussen went back to Everest again last year for the filming of a British Army movie.

Whenever he climbs a mountain, Rasmussen brings with him his video and still camera equipments, which weigh about 10 pounds, along with his 18-pound oxygen cylinder. These stuffs beside his climbing gears and special clothing.

Rasmussen had also experienced various struggles and hardships on top of the mountains. For one, he had to struggle with food, lack of sleep, and extreme cold.

"I really struggle with the rice, dahl bat, curried potatoes, pasta and Spam (not the computer stuff) cooked up in the Sherpa cook tent," Rasmussen said. "I lost 18 pounds on this trip, mostly muscle. You always lose weight at altitude, but it doesn't help when you're tired of the food that’s served.”

Moreover, he had also been witnessed to several deaths that occurred along the way as some climbers weren’t successful enough to reach the summit alive.

Nonetheless, no matter how tough it is to ascend on top of the mountains, still Rasmussen finds it a fulfilling feeling to be able to get there despite the hindrances and struggles along the way.
