Four climbers were caught by a blizzard high in the French Alps near Chamonix. The group was composed of a Kiwi woman, a British man and two others from France and Chile. The Kiwi woman died.
The group were caught by a storm with 120 kmh winds near the summit of the Aiguille de Bionnassay, an outlying peak of Mont Blanc, the highest peak in western Europe.
According to the French police, they had no tent and failed to dig a snow hole to take shelter.
The French Alps is a popular climbing destination with technically challenging snow and ice. Because of violent winds and snowstorms, rescuers encountered difficulty in their efforts to rescue the group.
Likewise, the New Zealand climbing fraternity is waiting to learn more about the identity of the Kiwi woman who died.
