Russian Climber Goes Back to Nepal
WEDNESDAY, 29 AUGUST 2007
Russian climber Valeri Babanov will be climbing the north face of 7710-meter mountain peak, Jannu. The north face was climbed only once before, and this was done by a Russian team.
After aborting the attempt to climb Kunyang Chhish in Pakistan, Babanov is back to his Russian-style roots, which gained him two Piolet d'Or awards. Two months ago, his Canadian climbing mate declared himself "not psychologically prepared."
This time, Babanov is climbing with young mountain guide Sergey Kofanov, who was a guide for Alex Abramov's 7 Summits-Club team. Kofanov rescued on his way down an Italian climber, who was left for two days in the death zones by his climbing mates.
