Expedition to Nanda Devi East Peak Launched

THURSDAY, 27 SEPTEMBER 2007

The Kumaon and Naga Regiments launched a mountaineering expedition to Nanda Devi East peak from Ranikhet, today. This expedition is to commemorate 13th Reunion of Kumaon and 7th Reunion of Naga Regiments and Tri Services affiliation ceremony.

Nanda Devi East lies in the Kumaon Himalaya at a hight of 7434M. The expedition to it involves some very technical climbs that have attracted mountaineers from around the world. Famous Mountaineer Tenzing Nogray was asked which had been his most difficult climb ever, expecting him to say Mount Everest. He surprised his mountaineers by saying Nanda Devi. The Nanda Devi East Massif has been named amongst the most beautiful mountains in the world by some of the famous international climbers and explorers. It also enjoys the status of a revered deity as Goddess Nanda Devi amongst the people of Kumaon and Garhwal.

The expedition, led by Major Shyamal Sinha comprises twenty five climbers from the Regiment and from affiliated Units of the Parachute Regiment, Mechanized Infantry and INS Khanjar. The team plans to complete the expedition in approx 40 days. The expedition was flagged off today by Lt Gen Satyavir Yadav, Colonel of the Kumaon and Naga Regiments and the Kumaon Scouts.
