Mahoney, Benner Make First Ascent of Lake Effect
WEDNESDAY, 27 FEBRUARY 2008
Kevin Mahoney and Greg Benner made the first ascent of Lake Effect last February 17. This was Mahoney's second first ascent at Lake Willoughby area in Vermont.
The line was first spotted by Mahoney who later monitored its activity until he got an opportunity of doing the first ascent. Mahoney finished the three pitches, while Benner led the last pitch.
The pitch 3 became difficult for Mahoney as it left no gear placements even after he tapped the ice. Mahoney continued climbing until at twenty feet where he found a C3 placement in a shallow crack, which gave him confidence to thrust his tools in the poor ice and finish leading the pitch.
