Brothers Set for Everest Expedition
FRIDAY, 14 MARCH 2008
Brothers Eric and Christian Otto are set to return later this month to the Himalayas where they will test their limits in an attempt to summit the world's highest peak.
If successful, 19-year-old Eric is poised to become one of the youngest Canadians to make it to the top of Mount Everest. On the other hand, Christian, 39, is an emergency room doctor in Ottawa and will also serve as the expedition team's physician for the 12- to 15-person Everest trip.
Christian plans to conduct a medical research for the Ottawa Heart Institute and the Ottawa Hospital's department of emergency medicine on the effects of altitude on the heart and pressure in the lungs. This research may lead to better treatments for a variety of illnesses, including emphysema and sleep apnea.
Hypoxic environment, Christian explains, is being at a high-altitude environment where there is low oxygen, simulating the increased pressure in the lungs. The team will measure the change in the lung pressure of the climbers on the expedition by using a portable ultrasound machine to perform an eco-cardiogram on the climbers.
