Try Ice Climbing at University of Minnesota Duluth
FRIDAY, 14 MARCH 2008
Ice climbing slowly becomes one of the popular winter activities for sports enthusiasts. It could be an outdoor or indoor activity. According to experts, fun comes with ice climbing when done as a group.
The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) offers recreational sports outdoor program every winter. On the other hand, staying inside promises another unique experience. The indoor climbing wall also at UMD offers an area that simulates ice climbing.
Packing up:
Buying pieces of gear required for ice climbing can be expensive, but one can usually find used gear that other climbers are selling. These include:
- The basics for ice climbing during summer months are harness, rope, carabiners, anchoring gear, and a belay device.
- Helmet - a must for ice climbing because of falling ice
- Ice climbing boots and crampons, a set of sharp points that clamp onto the boots
- Ice tools or ice axes - pick-like devices that one drives into the ice to pull himself higher
For those who are planning to give it a try, the UMD Recreational Sports Outdoor Program rents harnesses, helmets, boots, and crampons for ice climbing. W-Trek Outfitters, 230 E. Superior St., specializes in climbing gear and rents ice climbing equipment. Call 722-3593.
